Boston College vs Colgate Preview & Prediction

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

Preview, Prediction & Depth Chart for BC's Home Opener Against Colgate.

We could not help ourselves from making toothpaste jokes this game week, but lets be serious, this matchup for BC will be as easy as brushing your teeth. Wash, Rinse, and Repeat next week against UMass.

This game is the annual FCS game and Colgate is not a good FCS team. Colgate has been on the decline the past few years and their head coach had to recently step down for violations against school policy involving students. Their new coach is Stan Dakosty and this game against BC will be his first game ever as a head coach. To put this matchup in perspective, even Steve Addazio was able to put up 60+ points up on a similar Patriot League opponent Holy Cross in 2019. In that same year Holy Cross defeated Colgate decisively 31-14, and since then this Colgate team has gotten worse, while BC has continued to improve.

This will be a blowout game. Expect Hafley to stay pretty vanilla in their play calls for this game so there is no tape for future opponents. Do not expect Phil Jurkovec to play past halftime along with most of the starters. This will be a great opportunity for the younger players to receive some valuable live game experience.

The most exciting part about this game is that you can be there! That is the more important thing to take away. This is the first home game that Jeff Hafley & Co. will coach in front of us fans at Alumni Stadium. Who cares who BC is playing. College football is back! So support this team and get into the stands early Saturday so you can watch Hafley lead his team out of the tunnel for the first time in person!

Chance of winning: 98.2%

According ESPN's Football Power Index BC has a 98.2% chance of winning this game. Currently the spread for the game is around -49.5 in favor of BC, with the over/under around 52.5.

Does BC cover the spread?

Yes, we think that they will score at least 50+ points more than Colgate. We would highly suggest NOT putting any money on the Moneyline since you would need to bet your entire house just to make back $100. Warning: if you're betting on the spread - beware that this is an FCS opponent, Hafley could choose to pull all starters with a huge lead which could significantly reduce points gained in the second half. The 50+ point lead is a very risky bet. Also, we don't expect Colgate to score any points so betting the over/under is also an extremely risky bet.

Final Score: 0-55 (BC WINS)

This score could honestly be higher, but we believe Hafley won't keep the starters in that long, he probably will even pull our beloved QB2 Dennis Grosel out of the game pretty early too. The big thing to watch will be the defense. It's not impossible that Colgate scores a fluke TD or gets a late field goal, but we don't expect Colgate to score or to even put together any type of significant drive. It will be nice to see if Hafley's new defense can pull off the shutout against this lesser opponent.
